Kanchipuram Silk

Pure mulberry silk, real zari, and a border woven into the body by hand — the saree that has dressed brides and deities alike for four hundred years.

The Heritage

Woven the way
it was four
centuries ago

In the temple town of Kanchipuram, master weavers — many from families who have held the loom for generations — still work in pure mulberry silk, never blended, never compromised.

What sets a Kanchipuram apart is the korvai technique: the body and the border are woven separately and interlocked thread by thread, so the contrast border becomes part of the fabric itself rather than something stitched on.

The zari is real — silver thread dipped in gold — woven into temple borders, checks, and the motifs of mangoes and peacocks that have travelled, unchanged, down the centuries.

How To Read A Kanchipuram

The marks of the original

Four things to look for before you trust a Kanchipuram silk is what it claims to be.

01 — The Border

Korvai Join

Run a finger along where the border meets the body. A genuine korvai weave has a faint raised seam — it's interlocked, not printed or stitched.

02 — The Zari

The Rub Test

Real zari is silver wrapped in gold — it dulls gently with age rather than flaking. Cheaper imitations leave a faint metallic residue when rubbed.

03 — The Body

Mulberry Sheen

Pure silk catches light with a soft, uneven sheen. A flat, uniform shine across the fabric is almost always a synthetic blend.

04 — The Pallu

Woven Motifs

Temple spires, peacocks, and mangoes should be woven into the pallu, with the reverse side showing the same motif in negative — never just printed on top.
